Soaring Like an Eagle!

No comments:

I like to keep my feet planted on the ground. If I am about to board a plane, I don the wrist bands, have my travel sickness tablets and delegate the minding of the children to my ever agreeable wife. I sit and stare into the distance, hoping I will not experience the 15-hour flight of constant ‘throwing-up’ from Sydney to Los Angeles Airport that I endured years earlier.
Having the opportunity then to fly in a four-seater VH-SVA Cessna, next to The Salvation Army Flying Padre (Captain David Shrimpton) was a very surreal yet somewhat frightening experience. The adrenaline was pumping as we flew over the tip of the Northern-Territory landscape with its croc-infested, box jelly-fish inhabited waterways along with its stunning native flora and fauna.
Suddenly the thought hit me. We love to soar.
Even as children we love to pretend we are Superman flying through the midnight air towards our destination. We imagine we are all-powerful and we can soar above the mountaintops and sing that the hills are alive.
Then life hits us.
Emails tell us that we have not finished the paperwork correctly. People, who we thought were mates, tell us how pathetic we are. Someone tells us to not give up our day job. Others criticise us for not making the right choice. Even some family members want nothing to do with us.
We forget how to soar.
The picture of us flying in the sunset, without a care in the world, becomes a distant memory. The desires to rise above the circumstances that drag us down seem to be a losing battle.
What happens next is we live life with a mediocre attitude. We give up trying to do better, because it is too hard. Day by day we lose the capacity or willingness to dream what could be, because we are stuck in what is. We simply plant our feet on the ground and we stop soaring.
How many times have you heard of people with that kind of mindset?
“I’ve given up trying to change the culture of my workplace, because it’s just a waste of time!”
“I’m just going to stick it out for six months and see what happens.”
“She’s not talking to me; I’m not going to even bother.”
We must recapture the spark within us that allows us to dream. The still small voice that says we should give it another shot. The inkling we have to believe for a better future.
The Bible says that those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength and that they will soar on wings like eagles. This picture encapsulates a vision far richer than the pessimistic, mediocre mindset that so easily entangles Australian culture.
We are called to soar.
Now, I may not be very good with handling motion sickness, and at times want to keep my feet on the ground. Though, when it comes to the challenges and opportunities that life affords me, may I always attempt to soar like an eagle until I land at the appropriate destination that God has for me.

I Have a Dream! Read the DREAM and listen to the PODCAST

No comments:

On February 3rd, 2013, I shared this vision with the Craigieburn Salvation Army Community. I hope you are inspired to dream big when you read it:

I have a dream:
That the suicidal in our community will find Jesus will give them hope for living.

I have a dream:
That the depressed will find joy in the power of the Holy Spirit.

I have a dream:
Every hurting person in our community will have an opportunity to respond to Jesus.

I have a dream:
That this church would be used of God to restore broken marriages and broken relationships.

I have a dream:
That family members will give their lives over to Jesus.

I have a dream:
That this church will help people find a deep sense of purpose and calling to live for Jesus Christ.

I have a dream:
That God working in miraculous ways through the people of this church, would be the norm and not the exception to the norm.

I have a dream:
That God will abundantly finance the work of His church, primarily through the people of this church.

I have a dream:
That every idle back-bencher will find their role in the life of this church to help fulfill this great mission.

I have a dream:
That every hurting person would find hope.

I have a dream:
That every person would understand their God ordained giftedness and would use their gifts and skills to honour God.

I have a dream:
That 'Blood and Fire' would not be some cute ideology tucked away on some Salvation Army flag somewhere, but that it would characterize the essence of The Salvation Army movement.

I have a dream:
That The Salvation Army would understand that the best days of the Army were not in the days of William and Catherine Booth, but the best days are actually still to come.

I have a dream:
That this church would powerfully and prophetically impact the wider body of Christ. Not just people in our community but the wider body of Christ right around Australia, if not the Globe.

I have a dream:
That Salvos 3064 will have people waiting in the foyer hoping they will find a seat in the second or third morning service.

I have a dream:
That prayer meetings would be overflowing with passionate people seeking after God's heart.

I have a dream:
That these last few weeks have not just been a nice start to 2013, but it is just the start of something more, what God wants to do in 2013.

"Isn't that right Doreen?" - Stay Awake Revival is Coming

1 comment:

As I'm preaching up the front of the small church, I began to sense one of the old ladies was fading. You guessed it, she was beginning to fall asleep. Now, I would say, it was not because I was boring! Surely not?! She nonetheless slowly closed her eyes and caught some Z's during the message.

God is wanting to do something new within the Church, and I tell you, I don't want to be found to be sleeping.

Some of us long for a revival. The theologians expect us to rationally explain it. Some will say we actually need a reformation, not a revival. Others argue about the misuse of Scripture (e.g. that 2 Chronicles 7:14 was meant for the Israelites and God is not saying that God wants to heal our land today... or rather that we are not in need of repentance). Some say we live in revival and was simply need to become aware of it.

You can have the discussion. That's fine. The discussion is not wrong, and in some ways may be helpful.

Personally though, I simply continue to serve Jesus, believing wholeheartedly that the best days are still ahead for the church.

God has something brewing that I'm ready for, and I'm not talking about a tall, skinny latte. God is stirring something up among some, that I sense is going to move across the church. Lives will be impacted, souls will be saved, hope will abound for the broken. This will happen in an ever increasing manner. People will begin to say, 'Hey, are we in revival?!' Spiritual leadership will take on a whole other dimension, and integrity and holiness will be its foundation. God will bring forgiveness for past hurts, as we ask for it, and a fresh breathe of the wind of the Spirit will blow across the church.

So anyway, the old lady is sleeping. Well, napping. I thought I might see if she was willing to wake up, so as I'm preaching, I say, 'Isn't that right Doreen?'

She jumps up out of her skin, and we all chuckle a little bit...

When God comes a knocking, you ain't gonna find me sleeping.
